When is auto focus best utilized?

Auto focus is best utilized during surveillance where the location of the subject can be predicted because it allows the camera to quickly and accurately lock onto a subject that is moving or may enter the frame at a known point. Predictability in subject movement enhances the effectiveness of auto focus systems, which are designed to react swiftly to changes in the scene. This is particularly important in scenarios where capturing a fleeting moment is crucial.

In contrast, while auto focus can be used in low light conditions, it may struggle due to reduced contrast and clarity for the focus detection system. Long exposure shots require a stable setup, and often manual focus is preferred to avoid any shifting that could occur during the exposure. Similarly, for still life compositions, photographers often choose manual focus to ensure precise control over which elements in the composition are sharp.
